Wicomico Co. Sheriff’s Department warning citizens of recent phone scam

SALISBURY, Md. – The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a phone scam circulating the area.

We’re told the scammers are contacting citizens using a phone number that appears to be from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, but is actually an internet-based phone number. The subject on the phone then states that he is a Deputy with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and advises the citizens that they have missed a court date, providing details about the citizen to try to make it seem real. The subject eventually requests that money be transferred in an attempt to avoid the citizen from being in trouble with the court system.

Citizens are reminded that the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office will never contact citizens and request money over the phone in exchange for legal assistance. Anyone who receives one of these calls should not provide any information to the caller and report the call to law enforcement.
