Holiday Gift Safety: How to keep your packages safe from porch pirates
DELMARVA, – Christmas is right around the corner and many shoppers are getting gifts delivered right to their door step. The big question is will porch pirates get to your package before you do?
Experts say many shoppers now find home delivery more convenient than shopping in-store.
Salisbury Police Department says locally there have been 17 incidents of package theft reported so far. Although none of those reports have been in December, we’re told that number could go up as we get closer to the Christmas holiday.
Police recommend choosing a time window that you will be home to have it delivered. Plus you can install door cameras and choose the signature required option for delivery.
We’re told the most important thing you can do is report any unusual activity to local law enforcement.
“Because that brings our attention right to your neighborhood and might be helpful for preventing the next event and a neighbors resident or business,” Chief Duncan said.
“Which also helps to educate the public and in a lot of cases helps to identify potential targets or subjects of interest that we can talk to and determine whether or not they’ve been involved in any crime.”
Salisbury Police Chief Barbara Duncan also advises looking into the option of having your items being held with the carrier until you can pick them up.
SPD also has an online reporting system where you can report incidents 24/7. Visit their website here
