Weather Tidbits: August Fog & Winter Snow Folklore
This Weather Tidbits explores the folklore of can August fog predict winter snow? The folklore states “For every foggy morning in August, it will snow that many days in winter”. In August, the moisture is plentiful for fog to develop especially since its summer and humid; but in winter, we need the moisture to stick around but also cold enough for snow to fall. The problem with the folklore, there is no benchmark for the fogs in that its just fog or dense fog; and the same can be said on the snow with amount or intensity. Last winter, Salisbury had 25 foggy August days, with 7 dense fogs and 6 accumulating snowfalls, which was closest to folklore if we compare dense fogs and snowfalls.
