President Biden, Delaware leaders say their last goodbyes to Former Governor Minner at Memorial Service
MILFORD, Del. – Wednesday afternoon, President Joe Biden, Delaware leaders, friends, and family gathered to honor and say their last goodbyes to former Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner.
“It’s an honor to be here today not only with Governor Carney President Biden and our congressional delegates friends and family that’s what she was about humble beginnings, leaving her community church, this is the legacy of the incredible Ruth Ann Minner,” Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long said.
From serving as Lt. Governor to being elected the first female Governor of Delaware, Minner touched the lives of many and inspired leaders who followed her path.
“We were colleagues, and I learned a lot from her, she frankly mentored a lot of people,” Former Delaware Governor, Jack Markell, said.
“Governor Ruth Ann Minner’s is truly one of a kind, being a sharecropper’s daughter, her GED and the road she laid for women, such as myself, I had such an incredible experience now as Lt. Governor,” Lt. Governor Hall-Long said.
Minner was hailed for making positive changes for families and putting in place legislation that made a lasting mark on the First State.
“I think her legacy will definitely be, I mean time will tell, but I think one that we now know is that she really did fight for our underserved communities, whether it was woman or families or individuals who didn’t have a voice,” Delaware Representative, Bryan Shupe, said.
“She also does not get enough credit nationally for the fact that Delaware was the first state to offer free community college, to high school students, who worked hard and stayed out of trouble,” Markell said.
And, while the air was heavy with emotion Wednesday, I’m told it was also a chance to honor Minner’s accomplishments and the legacy she is leaving.
“So, it’s just a time to remember her, again to put arms around her family and say we are here for you and we are moving whatever direction you’re moving as long as it takes, as far as it takes and we will be here with you,” Representative Shupe said.
