Local sorority in the spirit of giving, fundraising for high school students

MILFORD, Del. – The Sussex County Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (DSTS) is holding holiday sales, selling homemade wreaths, ornaments, and food.

We’re told it’s all a part of a fundraiser to go towards scholarships for Sussex County students.

“And we want to help any student that we can to go on to get a higher education,” says Sherita Belle, President of the Sussex Co. Chp. of DSTS.

Sorority members tell 47 ABC, education is a part of their overall mission.

“Once you complete high school, to be able to live the American dream education is the way to go,” says Co-Chair of the holiday sale, Christa Edwards. She adds, “Whatever junior college for your college and education, as long as you’re getting it, it’s the key.”

However, we’re told if the pandemic showed them anything, it was just how important it is for students to have the financial ability to get to where they need to go.

“Just giving them some leadership and if you walk the path then hopefully they will follow,” says Edwards. Belle adds, “To be able to help give back so that in the future they can give back to others, so this is going to help us.”

We’re told, the scholarships can help up to 10 students, but members tell us, they want the scholarship fund to grow to help even more. They say that’s how the community will continue to thrive.

“It’s a way of giving back to all that was poured into me. I’m willing and we are as ladies educated women to want to pour back into the community give back,” says Edwards. Belle adds, “When we give and we help it’s going to be returned so we hope it’ll make a better place for this world.”

The sorority is hosting another holiday sale Saturday, December 4th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at First State Community Action in Georgetown.
