Somerset transportation priorities discussed this week, grant funding for bike trails on the way

SOMERSET COUNTY, Md. – Leaders from the Maryland Department of Transportation met with Somerset County officials this week to discuss transportation priorities, and n the list was money for their bike trails.

Recently, the county completed construction Phase 1 of a trail between Marion and Crisfield. They are now getting into the design of Phase 2 C and that phase will run in Westover.

The county is getting over $553,000 in grant funding for the design. Money they say is much needed.

“If we can take those monies, use them responsibly, do what the spirit of the grant was done then we are doing what our mission is which is to provide services for our residents and the visitors of the county,” Clint Sterling, Director of Recreation Parks & Tourism, said.

“To access schools, and stores, and post offices, and everything else that’s in those routes and local businesses,” Sterling said.

Once the design is complete, in the next grant cycle, they will apply for funds to construct that phase. Then, they will apply for funds to design the phase that will connect the Westover end with the Crisfield end to make one long stretch.
