WESTOVER, Md. – Somerset County Public Schools say they will adopt the Maryland Bayside Conference COVID-19 safety protocols for middle and high school student athletes and coaches participating in the upcoming winter sports season.

SCPS winter sports include basketball, indoor track, cheerleading, and strength and conditioning.

All students and coaches participating in an interscholastic athletic activity that requires the removal of a face mask will be subject to testing protocols:

  • Unvaccinated students and coaches must be tested for COVID-19 at least once every 14 calendar days
  • Vaccinated students and coaches are encouraged, but not required, to participate in this testing program. If there is a positive case of COVID-19 within the cohort, participating individuals must be tested

Participants who miss a scheduled COVID-19 test will not be eligible to participate in practices or competition under a test is administered and negative results are provided. Participants who test positive for COVID-19 are ineligible to participate in practices or games until cleared by the health department.

Officials who wear a mask while officiating will not be required to participate in the testing protocol, but those who do not wear a mask will be required to provide proof of vaccination or submit to routine testing.
