Police: Loaded firearm recovered at Smyrna Middle School

SMYRNA, Del. – Police say a loaded firearm was recovered from a student at Smryna Middle School on Wednesday.

According to Smyrna Police, at around 12 p.m. a staff member notified the school resource officer that a 14-year-old student had turned over a firearm that was in his possession to a member of the school staff. Further investigation revealed that the student was suffering a mental health crisis and was having thoughts of self-harm.

The student was placed in protective custody and taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Charges against the student will be pending further investigation.
