MSP warn citizens of phone scam circulating the Easton area
EASTON, Md. – Maryland State Police are warning citizens of a telephone scam in the Easton area.
According to police, the scammers cloned or “spoof” a Maryland State Police phone number in an attempt to scare victims into thinking they are the target of a criminal investigation or identity theft. More than 30 people reported Tuesday that they received a call in which their caller ID said “State Police” and the number 410-822-3101 or 410-479-3101, which are the actual numbers of the Maryland State Police Easton Barrack.
When the citizens answered the call, the person on the phone told them that a criminal complaint had been filed against them or that their identity had been stolen.
Maryland State Police remind citizens that they would never solicit personal information from anyone over the phone. Anyone who receives such a call should hang up and then contact their local state police barrack.
