Governor Carney makes Juneteenth a holiday

DELAWARE – In Delaware,  Governor John Carney signed a bill Wednesday making Juneteenth a state holiday.

The bill honors the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the U.S. Delaware Senator Ernie Lopez said he’s proud to see this bill get this far- and the recognition is long overdue.

Adding, the signing of the bill is an example of the embrace we all need to make together in regards to ensuring all members of communities feel valued.

“Celebrating communities, celebrating different folks in our communities is something that I think all of us need to sit back and realize its long overdue, and to have this as law now in the state of Delaware is another realization that we’ve got a long way to go but we are definitely moving in the right direction,” Senator Lopez.

This bill had full bipartisan support.

It went into effect when Governor Carney put his signature on the bill.
