Furnace Town asking community for help in restoring the historic site
SNOW HILL, Md. – Months ago you could take a walk through Furnace Town and be engulfed in the rich history. However, ever since the recent vandalism, those with the historic site say they’re just trying to bring back the artistic town.
“Because we are charged with restoring and preserving the historic buildings that are here,” says Claudia Hagle, Executive Director at Furnace Town.
We’re told last month’s vandalism is already estimated to cost thousands of dollars in damage. With the historical value intertwined throughout the grounds, the damage done can’t easily be replaced, so now they’re fundraising to offset the costs. “When you begin to add that up plus the craftsmen ship that’s involved it can get pretty expensive,” says Hagle.
Hagle tells 47 ABC, five of their historic buildings were damaged in the vandalism, which has forced them to close in the meantime. She says this act of defiance wasn’t just about the physical damage, it was about damaging the history the town brings.
“It really gives a tangible example of what history was and makes it come alive.”
Furnace Town holds a collection of buildings from all across Worcester County with the original furnace still standing. Their loyal volunteers and museum goers are also jumping in to help preserve its beauty, one person saying quote “Our home away from home,” in a post on Facebook. “In the face of seeing how ugly people can be, it also shows you just how gracious and generous and kind people can be,” says Hagle. She adds, “It really is a treasure and it’s right next door.”
Those with the Furnace Town also say, although they’re still recovering from the physical damage, their spirits aren’t broken.
