Flags For Heroes Project honors impact of local first responders
ACCOMACK CO., Va. – In Accomack County, one organization is highlighting the work everyday heroes do in the community by displaying flags in their honor.
The Eastern Shore Literacy Council’s Flag’s For Heroes Project is back for a second year, honoring those who make an impact in our lives. This year, the focus is on first responders in honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
You can purchase a flag in honor of a local hero that will be on display at the Eastern Shore Family YMCA in Onley, VA. Funds raised from the project will be used to improve adult literacy skills and support the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
Organizers say it’s a way to promote education and unity in the community.
“Once you develop a love for reading, I think you continue to have a love for reading. This is an opportunity for parents to be able to read with their young children and toddlers and prepare them preschool or kindergarten,” said Executive Director of Eastern Shore Literacy Council Rose Rulon. “And that’s what I think the flag also represents. Not only just heroes but all of us together as a community celebrating who we are.”
The cost of a single flag sponsorship is $10, and the deadline to reserve one is October 20th.
