MILFORD, Del. – Police say they are investigating a crash that claimed the life of a toddler in the Milford area Tuesday evening.

According to police, the crash took place shortly after 8 p.m. Investigation revealed that a 1998 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 72-year-old Milford man, was traveling westbound on Slaughter Beach Road, negotiating a slight curve in the roadway. A 2-year-old was reportedly visiting family at a residence on Slaughter Beach Road, when for unknown reasons, the child, wearing dark-colored clothing, was standing in the westbound travel lane of Slaughter Beach Road.

A passing motorist was stopped in the eastbound lane, trying to contact the child. The driver of the Toyota unfortunately was unable to see the child in the roadway, subsequently hitting him in the westbound travel lane. The driver came to a stop just west of the crash scene.

The 2-year-old male was taken to an area hospital but was later taken to Nemours Children’s Hospital. The child reportedly died while en route to Nemours. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The 72-year-old driver was not injured.

Slaughter Beach Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
