Somerset Board of Ed. meeting rescheduled, parents continue boycotting mask mandate

SOMERSET CO., Md. – An issue we first saw in Wicomico County is now making its way to Somerset County.

School officials canceled yet another board of education meeting because of parents who refused to wear masks.

Somerset County Sheriff Ronnie Howard tells us the board asked for a deputy in the area just in case things got out of hand.

Penny Nicholson, Chairwoman of Somerset Board of Education, says the meeting was rescheduled due to the setting becoming what she called an unsafe environment. Nicholson also tells 47ABC that she understands parents being frustrated, but the board has to follow the guidelines set in place.

“If we chose not to support the mandate, the State Board of Education could withhold funds for programs, censor our board, and our children need every bit of funding that we can get,” said Nicholson.

As of right now, there’s no word yet on when the meeting will be rescheduled for.

Of course, we will continue to follow this story and provide updates as we learn more.
