Weather Tidbits: Hail Sizes II

Hail sizes are explored once again on this Weather Tidbits, but also how rare or common they occur. Hail is measured by the diameter of the stone.  The sizes are compared to certain types of sports balls, coins and food items. Sizes tend to range from pea size to grapefruit. The most common hail diameters will be a quarter and half inch or pea & marble size hail. Hail becomes uncommon involving sizes of penny at 3/4 inch, nickel at 7/8 and quarter at 1″. Once hail reaches quarter size, its considered severe. Rare hail types are ping pong at 1.5″, golf ball at 1.75″ & hen egg at 2″. Rare hail types are ping pong at 1.5″, golf ball at 1.75″ & hen egg at 2″. Tennis ball of 2.5″ and baseball of 2.75″ size hail occur very rarely. Exceptionally rare hail sizes include softball at 4″ & grapefruit at 4.5″.
