UMES New Hawks Week 2021

PRINCESS  ANNE, MD. It’s New Hawks Week for freshman at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

The week is devoted to providing incoming first year students with resources on surviving the high school to college transition.

There will be numerous icebreakers, a comedy show, and a New Hawks Pinning Ceremony.

We caught up with a few campus newbies  and they tell 47ABC they’re excited to start their new journey, even if they’re college experience isn’t starting off as normal as they expected due to COVID-19.

“To college coming in I wasn’t really nervous because I’ve been doing the things to keep myself safe,” said Freshman Spencer Settles.

“I was really nervous coming here at first. Like I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m coming to an HBCU so I just felt really at home,” said Freshman Mackenzi Evans.

We also spoke with university personnel that say students health and safety continues to be top priority.

The university’s first day of classes is August 30th.
