Tunnel to Towers Foundation plans 9/11 tribute in upcoming events, tickets available
LEWES, Del. –
We are less than a month away from the first annual “Let us do good” ball. The event is bring put on by Tunnel to Towers Delmarva at the Fort Miles Museum in Lewes, Delaware.
“Tunnel to Towers is a foundation that helps support our military and first responders as well as our gold star families who have lost family members in the line of duty,” says Brian Brubaker, with Tunnel to Towers Delmarva.
The ball is being held this year in honor of Corporal Stephen Ballard. The Delaware State Police Corporal was killed in the line of duty back in 2017. Earlier this Summer, Tunnel to Towers actually paid off Corporal Ballard’s widow’s mortgage. It’s part of many programs they have to support our military and first responders.
Organizers say this year’s event is also important as it falls near the 20th anniversary of 9/11. They have a special ceremony planned at the ball to commemorate this milestone.
Brubaker says, “It’s a very significant milestone because you figure the people that are, our youth right now, were not aware of what happened 20-years-ago. So we do have to make sure that we never forget those attacks and everything and how it changed this country as a whole.”
Tickets to the ball on September 17 are on sale now, click here to get yours. You do need to get them in advance because they won’t be sold at the door. 47 ABC’s Jordan Kudisch will emcee the ball.
But this isn’t the only fundraiser Tunnel to Towers has planned, the 3rd Annual 5k Run and Walk will be September 19th. The event will be held at Cape Henlopen State Park, at the Fort Miles Museum.
New this year they are planning something they are calling the “Siller Stretch.” It’s named for Stephen Siller, who the foundation was formed after. You may remember he’s the fallen firefighter who raced on foot from the Brooklyn Battery tunnel to the twin towers to ultimately give his life to help others. After the finish line in Lewes, runners will continue up to the hill to Fort Miles in Siller’s memory. But organizers say this isn’t going to be a traditional 5K.
Brubaker says, “the course itself, we have changed it up a little bit, it’s not a standard 5k it is actually 3.43 miles to honor the 343 firefighters that were killed on 9/11.”
