Police: Georgetown man assaults trooper during traffic stop
HARBESON, Del. – A Georgetown man is behind bars after he reportedly assaulted a trooper and fled on foot during a traffic stop Saturday night.
We’re told at around 9:15 p.m., a trooper traveling northbound on Hollyville Road observed a black Chevrolet Malibu traveling in front of the patrol vehicle make several traffic infractions and fail to stop at the stop sign at Zoar Road. A traffic stop was initiated, and contact was made with the driver, 27-year-old Deandre Mapp. A strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from inside the vehicle, and a criminal investigation ensued.
During a search of the car, police found approximately .091 grams of heroin. Mapp was taken into custody as a result, but while being escorted by the trooper to the police car, he reportedly physically assaulted the trooper and fled on foot. He was eventually taken into custody a short distance away and a bag containing 3.03 grams of marijuana that he threw before fleeing was found near his vehicle.
Mapp was charged with resisting arrest, third degree assault, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, failure to stop at stop sign, failure to remain in a single lane, and no license plate tint. He was held at SCI on a $5,204 secured bond.
The trooper sustained minor injuries during the incident.
