Local music students getting the chance to open up for Foreigner on Freeman Stage

SALISBURY, Md.- One note at a time. High School Students from the Academy of Music Performance or AMP, in Salisbury,  are practicing for an acapella performance at the Freeman Stage later this month.

But this isn’t just a regular performance, it’s much more.

“I was excited, I was looking forward to it, I mean we are opening up for Foreigner at freeman stage, I’ve been there a few times, it’s a great place to play, it’s a great crowd, it’s just a great experience,” Tommy Oechsli, an upcoming high school senior and AMP student, said.

“I was so excited because I listen to Foreigner all the time so I’m like what,” Logan Oluvic, an upcoming 10th grader and AMP student, said.

” I was so excited, this is like one of the coolest things we’ve probably ever done,” Carley Twigg, an upcoming senior and AMP student, said.

AMP said they have a great relationship with the Freeman Stage and their music students have performed there before.

But students said being able to open up for Foreigner is something they didn’t see coming.

“I would’ve never imagined, I thought I would be still playing twinkle twinkle little star by now,” Oluvic said.

Students also added this opportunity means the world to them.

“Music is everything to me, and every outlet and aspect of life, music has been the one thing that shines through, it’s been a part of me my whole life and its what I want to do with life, this is just another thing I’ve been blessed to be a part of,” Oechsli said.

“I have had a passion for singing since I was little, I grew up looking at my sister singing and I just love it,” Twigg said.

So, with a love for singing and a chance to shine on the big stage these students are working hard in the studio with the help from their instructors.

“It’s takes a lot of team work, a lot of stuff goes into it, a lot of people have to be involved, but when it comes together it’s a great work of art,” Oechsli said.

“They are very motivated, they are very talented, and they were anxious to learn and it’s just a very exciting opportunity,” Nick Dudas, music instructor at AMP said.

“As much as I love the music, I also love teaching students and coaching students on how to perform to the best of their abilities and them fully reaching their potential and what they are capable of,” Rachel Bailey, music instructor and vocal coach at AMP, said.

The performance will be from 6:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on the Freeman Stage.

We’re told there are 14 students participating in this performance, they were pulled from current AMP enrollment lists and some kids that are just joining them.

The concert is August 21 and foreigner is supposed to play starting at 7 p.m.
