Del. teen beating the odds after serious accident leaves him seriously injured

MILLSBORO, Del. – Five years ago, Garret Rogers experienced an accident that left him fighting for his life. Now Garret’s story is inspiring others with his perseverance, will to win, and his push to beat the odds.

At 10 years old, Garret Rogers was at a baseball game just running across the street to grab a foul ball when he was tragically struck by a car. That accident left him in a coma with a severe brain injury, broken bones, and a long road to recovery.

Fast forward five years, and Garret just won his first national USPA lifting competition.

“He’s just come so far in such a short amount of time not only in looking at his powerlifting career but also what he’s overcome given the accident, it’s really not that long ago,” said Travis Rogers, Garret’s trainer.

Doctors told Garret years ago that he may never walk again. But, that didn’t stop him. Although Garret has always been an avid baseball player, in 2018 he began weight lifting and fell in love.

“It’s always about making your dreams become a reality so you just have to push, do the work-outs, and try to achieve your dreams,” said Garret.

Now he says it’s all about fine-tuning his skills and growing every day.

Garret’s trainer and stepfather both say he is a humble kid, and seeing how hard he’s worked to get where he’s at today is commendable.

Although Garret says there’s still some challenges he’ll face for the majority of his life, just knowing that he’s able to do what he loves is all that matters to him. He says he hopes to one day be number one in the nation for lifting, but he’s alright with just taking it day by day.
