Passport processing delays impacting travel
MARYLAND- If you’re looking to travel out of the country any time soon and you need a new passport, experts say you should get on that as soon as possible.
Triple A said right now there is a significant increase in the time it’s taking the U.S. State Department to process passports.
In fact so much so, that many travelers have been forced to postpone previously booked vacations.
The delays are because of COVID-19 related factors, as well as a high demand in people wanting to travel outside of the United States.
“Anyone who is planning to travel outside the United states to make sure that their passport is up to date and if it’s not they want to start making that process right now to even renew or obtain a passport because it’s taking about 4 months at this time to process a passport, which is significantly longer than it was taking prior to the COVID- 19 pandemic,” Ragina Ali, Public and Government Affairs Manager for AAAMidatlantic MD, said.
Triple A says many countries now require the passport expiration date to be at least six months after the date of return travel, so anyone planning travel through 2022 is urged to begin the passport renewal process now.
