Multi-vehicle crash kills one in Dover
DOVER, Del. – Dover Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that killed a man and injured several others Wednesday evening.
Shortly after 5 p.m., police say a 2002 Honda Odyssey being driven by 88-year-old Richard Chappell was traveling south on POW-MIA Parkway, approaching the Wyoming Mill Spur. At the same time, a 2017 Infinity QX80 was traveling north on POW-MIA Parkway, approaching the same intersection. A 2004 Nissan Maxima was facing eastbound on the Wyoming Mill Spur, preparing to turn left onto the northbound side of the POW-MIA Parkway.
The driver of the Nissan pulled into the intersection, directly into the path of the Honda, causing the Honda’s front end to hit the front driver’s side of the Nissan. The impact caused both vehicles to travel in a southeast direction and partially into the path of the Infinity that was traveling northbound, hitting the driver side of the infinity.
Chappell, who was reportedly properly restrained at the time of the accident, was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. An 86-year-old passenger in the Honda was taken to Bayhealth Kent General for major injuries but was later airlifted to UPenn Hospital in Philadelphia where she remains in serious condition.
The 20-year-old female driver and 15 and 17-year-old passengers in the Nissan were treated and released with minor injuries. The 48-year-old male driver of the Infinity refused medical treatment.
The crash remains under investigation.
