Delaware state champion makes petition to create UDel track and field men’s team
DELAWARE- An incoming Freshman at the University of Delaware is trying to raise awareness about the school not having a men’s track and field NCAA Division 1 team.
Ryan Wallace was on the track and field team at Middletown High School where he won state championship titles.
Wallace has plans of going to the University of Delaware, but he said he wouldn’t be able to continue his track and field career as a D1 athlete because they only have a club team.
He decided to create a petition to make his voice heard, not only for him, but for other athletes who are in his shoes.
“When I first started it it was kinda like here goes nothing, it was like a gamble and then I’ve seen more people support it. I’ve honestly have been surprised its not just people in the track and field community, Wallace said.
“There’s a huge love of this sport, from fans and from athletes, and you know this is just needed to keep that inner motivation to keep that competition level to keep these kids engaged,” Andrew Johnson, Middletown track and field coach and University of Delaware alumni, said.
Right now, the petition has over 700 signatures.
