18th century old museum reopens after 16-month closure, bringing back a piece of history for the town

DAGSBORO, Del. – A museum officially reopened its doors after a 16-month closure. We’re told the Prince George’s Chapel was built back in the late 1700’s, and those with the chapel say, they’re excited to share the history again and with a few updates. “It’s a great opportunity to visit, you not only get to visit history, you never know what you’re going to run into,” says Mark Phillips, a local pastor and Vice President of the Prince George’s Chapel.

Those with the non-profit organization, Friends of Prince George’s Chapel tell us, the building predates the revolutionary war and was eventually restored as a museum in the early 1970’s. “I think it’s good quality and good fellowship to remember the things in the past, how we grew up,” says Phillips. He adds, “How do we preserve our heritage if we don’t preserve some of the history for events that we’ve gone through in our life.”

Through the years, those involved in preserving the museum say, the chapel holds more than just historical value, “We are always walking through the blood of Jesus, we’re not stepping over it and that’s what I think about every time I walk into this chapel or any church,” says Phillips.

The church is filled with historical artifacts, articles, pictures, and original architecture; showing a small piece of the town’s history, and beauty in preservation. “We should be interested in what our country and what our town in our cities are doing we should take part in helping preserve what’s been put before us,” adds Phillips.

He also shares with us how his faith intertwines with his dedication to teaching the younger generation, “How do we explain to our kids and our grandkids how we were raised and what we did to be the people that God called us to be?”

Now those with the friends of Prince George’s Chapel say, even though donations are greatly appreciated to keep this building up and running, they’re just happy to be able to share the history with the town of Dagsboro.

We’re told the chapel will be open the 4th Sunday of every month from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
