Queen Anne’s softball captures their first state title in program history

GLEN BURNIE, MD.- Behind a Kamryn Brandt walk off single in the bottom of the 8th inning, Queen Anne’s Softball won their first ever 2A State Title 2-1 over Calvert High.

Queen Anne’s made their first ever state title appearance back in 2019, they fell to La Plata 9-0 but returned almost the entire starting lineup in 2020. It looked like 2020 was going to be the Lions year until their season was derailed by COVID-19. Jump ahead to the 2021 season, still alot of that 2019 starting lineup returning to the field and Queen Anne’s was once again the top team in the Bayside. The Lions coasted through the regular season at 13-0 and then won every playoff game by at least 6 runs coming into the 2A State Title game as the number two seed taking on (4) Calvert.

It was a major defensive battle through the first seven innings. Only seven combined hits, 25 combined strikeouts between Cameron Whiteford (13) and Emma DeBore (8). Still scoreless through seven, we would head to extras.

The offenses finally got going in the eighth, Calvert able to get runners on second and third and Megan Chroniger slapped a single into shallow center to bring home the tie breaking run with two outs on the board. As the ball was being returned to the pitchers mound, the runner left third and came home while Whiteford was back on the mound resulting in the third out.

In the bottom of the frame, the Lions returned the favor. With two on and one out on the board, Breanna Athey popped up a sacrifice bunt that was caught by a diving Alexis Drayer. After the catch, Drayer looked for a double play to end the game but over threw first base to bring the tying run home from third. The very next batter, senior Kamryn Brandt looked to put it away. With a 3-2 count, Brandt sent a single into the right field gap to bring the game winner home from third as Queen Annes captured the programs first ever State Title 2-1 over Calvert.
