GEORGETOWN, Del. – A Delaware man is behind bars after he led police on a chase Thursday night.

Just after 11:30 p.m., a trooper traveling eastbound on Hardscrabble Road, west of Shortly Road, observed a vehicle approaching from behind at a high rate of speed with its high beam headlights on. The trooper pulled to the shoulder in the fully marked patrol vehicle, allowing the vehicle to pass, before activating its emergency equipment and trying to stop the vehicle. The vehicle failed to stop and continued traveling until turning onto Rodney Street in the Homestead Mobile Home Park.

Once the vehicle came to a dead-end cul-de-sac, the driver turned the car into the marked patrol vehicle, hitting the front right corner. It then reportedly pulled away and drove through the yard of a residence, barely missing the corner of a mobile home and trash can. Once back on the street, the vehicle stopped in front of a residence.

Police were able to take the driver, identified as 23-year-old Victor Cruz, into custody. A strong odor of alcohol was detected, and on Cruz’s person, police found a Randall’s Adventure and Training ESEE-5 knife with a 5.25″ blade.

Cruz was committed to SCI on a $26,007 bond for possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, disregarding a police officer signal, driving under the influence, and multiple traffic violations.
