Late goal sinks Smyrna title hopes

DOVER, Del. – Smyrna’s girls soccer team went the distance with the two-time defending champions, but lost on a late Padua goal. The Eagles fell in the DIAA Division-I girls soccer championship, 2-1.

Mackenzie Martin fired a missile from 20 yards out that found the back netting. That tally tied the game at 1.

Padua’s offense came out aggressive in the second half. The Eagles defense turned away a number of Panda charges, but Anna Poehlmann re-directed a shot into the cage for the championship winning goal.
