Kauffman’s goal with 29 seconds on the clock lifts Decatur past Parkside
BERLIN, MD.- Behind a Sadie Kauffman goal with 29 seconds left on the clock, the Stephen Decatur Seahawks defeated Parkside 7-6 in their first action in over 700 days to start the season 1-0. The loss drops Parkside to 0-1.
The last time we saw any spring sports in the Bayside, Decatur girls lacrosse was making an appearance in the 2019 MPSSAA 3A Final Four. They fell to Westmister 15-5 but it looked like 2020 would be another great season for the Seahawks. The Parkside Rams just missed out on the 2019 2A tournament falling in the play in round 11-9 to North Caroline. Both teams were expected to make noise in the 2020 tournaments but those expectations were dashed by COVID 19 and the cancellation of the entire spring season.
Jump ahead 725 days, the two teams were facing off to kick off the 2021 spring Bayside season. The Seahawks with a new head coach at the helm, Lindsay Owens. Owens inheriting a team fresh off a state Final Four appearance and a lot of young talent.
The Rams began the game hot, jumping out to a 2-0 lead but the Seahawks answered. A 3-0 run to take the lead but Raegan Becker netted one for Parkside with 15 seconds left in the half to make it a 3-3 game headed to the break.
The Seahawks came out of the half firing, two quick goals by Britt Leonard and Saige Figgs for a 6-4 lead with under five minutes to play looked to put the Rams away. But it was going to take more than that to end it. Reagan Becker rattled off two straight with two minutes left to tie it at 6 giving the Rams some hope. Decatur won the ensuing face-off and ran 1:30 off the clock and with 29 seconds on the clock, Sadie Kauffman netted what looked like the game winner for the Seahawks. Again, the home team won the face-off and was able to run out the clock from there as Decatur kicks off the season with a thrilling 7-6 win, their first under new head coach Lindsay Owens.
