Central falls in an 11 inning heartbreaker to Caravel in the DIAA Softball title game
DOVER, Del.- In an 11 inning marathon, the Sussex Central Golden Knight’s fell to Caravel 1-0 in the 2021 DIAA state title game. The Knights endeded the season as the number one seed in the playoffs, finishing with a 21-2 record.
Central came into this one as the hottest team in the state, a 21 game win streak and one of the best pitchers in the DIAA. Freshman ace Madge Layfield with 200 strikeouts in just under 100 innings this season. Paired with the second highest run scored average in the state, the Knights looked like they were poised to take home the state title.
It was a historic pitchers dual through seven innings, Layfield (7) and Caravels Jessica Walters (6) surrendering just 13 total hits and neither defense allowing any runs so to extras we would go. After a scoreless eighth and top ninth, it looked like Central was finally going to end it as Kaylee Verosko sent a shot into center field, a sac fly to bring home a runner from third but the run was waved off! No tag on third and a throw out form the outfield took the run off the board for the third out forcing an 11th inning.
In the top of the 11th, Brooke Holdsworth called game. The sophomore sent a double into center field to bring home Veronica Diomede from third to finally break the scoreless tie and give the Bucs the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the inning. In the second frame of the 11th, Central rallied. The Knights managed to get two runners on base (2nd and 3rd) with only one out on the board. Unfortunately for Central, thats as close as they’d get to home. A caught bunt and a throw out at first ended any scoring threat for Caravel as the Bucs sealed it for the 2021 DIAA State Title.
