Cape baseball stays undefeated, rolls past Lake in five innings
LEWES, Del.- Behind 5 runs in the first two innings, the Cape Henlopen Vikings rolled past Lake Forest 13-3 to move to 5-0 on the season. The loss drops the Spartans to 2-3-1.
The Vikings jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to end the second inning, three in the first inning and then two more in the second. The Spartans finally got on the board in the third after a pass ball brought Shane Johnson home from third. Just as it looked like Lake was going to get back in it, the Vikings got the bats going again. Timothy Hitchcock sent a sac fly into right field bringing Gage Joseph home from third. They’d get another on a pass ball to make it 6-1 to end the third. In the fourth the Vikings plated four more runs, including a two run inside the park home run by Hunter Rauch to make it a 10-1 lead for Cape.
In the top of the fifth, Tristian McCray knocked a single into shallow right field to bring home Chase Killen (3rd) and Gabe Martin (2nd) to cut into the Viking lead. But, in the bottom of the inning Cape looked to put the game away. Freshman Gage Joseph blasted a two run homer out of center field to make it a 9 run lead and to put it away, Justin Marsh sent a dribbler up center field to bring the game ending run (Nicholas Cox) home. The Vikings win it in five innings 13-3.
Josh Reinhold dominated on the mound for Cape throwing a now hitter through four innings along with eight strikeouts.
Cape looks to continue their hot streak this Saturday when they host Caravel at 1 pm. The Spartans return to action when host Polytech next Tuesday at 4:15.
