Wesley falls to Salisbury in the Wolverines final game at Mike Drass Field

DOVER, Del.- In the final installment of the ‘Route 13 rivalry, and Wesley final home game before the athletics program gets shut down, the Wolverines fell to Salisbury 32-30. With the win, the Sesgulls begin their three game Spring season at 1-0 while the loss drops the Wolverines to 0-1.

Back in July when Del. State announced they were acquiring Wesley College as they were going through financial struggles, it was as decided that the athletics of Wesley College would be dissolved. That gave all Wolverines teams one last season this spring. Football scheduled three games for their final season, the first hosting bitter rival Salisbury.

The teams have split their last two meetings, Wesley taking 2018’s matchup in OT. SU took last years 45-38. Receiving the opening kickoff, the Gulls started out sloppy. A mishandled exchange turned the ball over in their own territory set up Wesleys offense nicely and the Wolverines took advantage. Sussex Tech grad Xavier Drummond took a 3rd down handoff, broke through the line and raced to the end zone for the games opening touchdown. The two point try would be no good so the Wolverines held a 6-0 lead to end the first quarter.

After a pick with just over a minute to play in the first quarter, the Gulls started to drive. Just a few plays into the second, Junior QB Jack Lanham hit Hunter Celaver on a slant and Cleaver stretched it over the goal line for six. After the extra point, the Seagulls took a one point lead. After a Wolverines three and out, SU put another nice drive together capped off by their big back Marcus Wilson on a short three yard TD run. On the next Welsey drive, the Wolverines struck through the air. Brady Walters dropped a dime to Jerrish Halsey on a 63 yard TD. Two point conversion was good so it was a tie ballgame at the half.

In the second half, not much happened on the offensive side fo the ball for the first eleven minutes. That all changed after a Jack Lanham interception in Seagull territory to set up the Wolverine offense inside the fifteen. A few run plays later, Latrell McCants powered his way in from two yards out to take the lead for Wesley. With the two point conversion successful, the Dub took an 8 point lead with 4:36 to play in the third quarter and held on into the fourth.

Thirty seconds into the fourth, the Seagulls cut into the Wesley lead with a Brett Schrecongost 27 yd field goal. After a quick Wolverines three and out, the Gulls took the lead off another tough Marcus Wilson touchdown run to give Salisbury the 25-22 lead with 14 minutes to play in the game. The Salisbury defense stepped up again forcing another Wesley punt with eight minutes left in regulation. The Gulls took six minutes off the clock and capped their drive off with a Jack Lanham 18 yard TD run to all but put the game away with 2 minutes to play. Wesley would score a touchdown with :25 seconds to play but it was too late. The onside kick was unsuccessful as Salisbury held on for the 32-30 win over Welsey in the final installment of the Route 13 rivalry.
