New black owned luxury eye shop grand opening

SALISBURY, Md. – “Bring your personality, we have the look.” That’s the slogan of the first black owned and operated luxury optics shop on the eastern shore  which just opened on Saturday.

Duran Whaley, sole owner and operator says he’s been working on opening since last March. With more than 15 years in the optical industry, he says he was ready to do this by himself. “I’m just overjoyed honestly, it’s a huge accomplishment for not just me but a lot of young kids that look like me,” says Whaley. “If you follow God and follow his lead and take his steps, I feel like you can come out on top so I feel like can persevere through anything after doing this.”

The look optics provides luxury prescription eyewear, but at the same price as local competing eyewear shops. Whaley says he hopes to provide others with employment, but also show people of color they can be successful too no matter what. “Just doing this was a statement piece just letting people know that it’s possible. No matter where you come from, no matter what your background is, there’s nothing that can’t be done,” says Whaley.

Whaley also tells 47 ABC, the shop is only filling prescriptions but he eventually hopes to have an on site eye doctor, and add more employees to his business.
