Gun crime loophole bill being introduced
DELWARE – A bipartisan bill being introduced in Delaware would close a loophole in the law by making it a crime for a person to attempt to purchase a gun, who is knowingly ineligible.
When purchasing a gun, you have to go through a background check and before, if you were ineligible you just wouldn’t be able to get the gun. If this bill were to pass, people who are trying to purchase a gun through fraudulent means would face a penalty.
Bill sponsors say, this bill will hold those accountable who knowingly go to buy a gun but get denied. Police would be notified and measures would be taken to reprimand the person for doing so.
“We’re just trying to enhance public safety, keep firearms out of individuals who unfortunately have lost that privilege that have lost that right, it’s a matter of protecting and preserving legal ownership of guns and trying to keep guns out of peoples hands that unfortunately lost that right to have them,” says State Representative Lyndon Yearick.
Bill sponsors also tell 47 ABC, this is not to prevent everyone from buying guns, this is to ensure that people who lost their privilege to own a gun are held accountable for their attempts to buy one. The bill will be presented either next week or after Easter break.
