Weather Tidbits: TLE
This Weather Tidbits dives into the topic of TLE. TLE or Transient Luminous Event, that involve upper atmospheric lightning. These are short-lived electrical phenomenon that occur above thunderstorm clouds. TLE’s consists of 3 common types, which are blue jets, sprites and elves. Blue jets are ejections from the active core regions of a thundercloud; and propagate upward in a 15° angle within a narrow cone. Sprites are large red flashes directly above an active thunderstorm, and coincide with cloud to ground lightning. Elves are rapidly expanding disk-shaped regions of luminosity; that are likely results of electromagnetic pluses (EMP).
