Royals drop to St. Marks as the Herling buzzer beater falls short
GEORGETOWN, Del.- After a last second buzzer beater fell short, the Delmarva Christian Royals lost to St. Marks 41-39 to drop to 1-2 on the season.
Delmarva Christian began the season with high hopes coming off of an 18-2 record the 8 seed in the DIAA playoffs while returning a large core of players from that team. Add first team All-Bayside selection, former WiHi stand out Jayson Handy, and things look very promising for the Royals. After splitting their first two games, DC came into todays game looking to get back on track.
St. Marks came out hot, within they first thirty seconds of the game, Jabri White threw down a one handed slam to get the momentum on their side. Midway through the second quarter, the Spartans took a seven point lead but the Royals were able to fight back and take their first lead of the game off of a Lou Fleurima and one bucket. St. Marks took a two point, 14-12 lead into the break.
It was back and forth the entire second half, St. Marks would pull ahead by ten in the final two minutes but once again the Royals fought back and cut the lead to just two with ten seconds to play. Off of a missed Spartan free throw, the Royals had one final shot to tie or take the lead and the final Gabe Herline heave fell just short as Delmarva Christian dropped to St. Marks 41-39.
The Royals return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Wilmington to take on Salesianum at 7 pm.
