Pocomoke community surprises well-known bishop for his birthday

POCOMOKE, Md.- Friends and family came from far and wide to Pocomoke Saturday afternoon to wish Bishop Isaac Jenkins Senior a happy 90th birthday.

“We’re just so happy that god has given us this day to celebrate him, 90 years that’s a blessing,” Gloria Broady, Jenkins’ daughter, said.

Jenkins’ daughters wanted to honor their dad with a party, but COVID-19 changed their plans into a birthday car parade.

They say it is well deserved as he’s been giving back to the community since coming to Pocomoke in 1960.

He was a bishop for 57 years and ran a program that helped troubled youth.

“He’s done so much for everybody, that’s why were having this celebration because people are like oh my god what can we do for Bishop. We still love him even though he’s retired,” Rotunda Jenkins, Jenkins’ daughter, said.

The community’s support of Jenkins’ was clear, as over a hundred cars lined up at Pocomoke Middle School and headed to the Bishop’s home.

“I’ve seen parades in cars like this, but never have I seen something like this give me honor for the 57 years I’ve pastored one church,” Bishop Jenkins said.

Bishop Jenkins’ daughters didn’t initially plan on celebrating with a car parade, but it ended up being a success.

“I shall never forget it and i know many others are going to wish they had this kind of honor,” Bishop Jenkins said.

Bishop Jenkins said to ensure happiness at this age you should stay in good health, and that means eating and drinking right.

We are told on top of being a bishop at New Macedonia Baptist Church, he helped get people get high school diplomas and fed the homeless.
