First State Community Action Agency awarded $80K to implement summer enrichment program in June

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.-The First State Community Action Agency was recently awarded $80,000 to implement their first, 6-week summer enrichment program in June.

We are told the program is called the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School and will be hosted in Georgetown and it will focus on reading.

The Schools says they’ll be using student learning interns from local colleges to help students in grades Kindergarten through 5th.

Agency leaders tell us this program is important because they want to close the learning gap that many students are facing right now.

“It’s going to bring a value to us here in Sussex County,” Bernice Edwards, Executive Director of FSCAA, said.

“There’s been some summer learning loss, there’s been some academic declines we are going into the those communities where school literacy enrichment programs are either non-existent or they are not affordable,” Dr. Sandi Hagans-Morris, Program Director of FSCAA, said.

We are told the program will also connect families with resources in the community.

The funding the agency received is through United Way and they hope to expand the program in the future.
