Delaware House Bill could increase food donations to those in need if passed
DELAWARE- A house bill that is currently in the House Health & Human Development Committee would increase food donations to those in need if it passes.
House Bill 52 seeks to build on existing federal law to offer additional protections in Delaware to individuals and organizations donating food in good faith.
We are told by one of the sponsors of the bill, Senator Brian Pettyjohn, that the idea came from the Sportmen’s Caucus as a way to allow more butcher shops to process deer that is donated to the Sportsmen Against Hunger Program they have in Delaware.
Sen. Pettyjohn said that this bill is important because it will help to feed more Delawareans, especially during these uncertain times.
“As we’ve seen over the past 11 months or so, you know the lines of food banks are always very long when they have an event, which means they’re are people within are state that still have an issue with hunger with feeding their families,” Sen. Pettyjohn (R), said.
Sen. Pettyjohn said in recent years in some meat processing locations butcher shops have received over 19,000 pounds of food to food pantries.
We are told if House Bill 52 is passed it will also allow meat processors to have protections against any type of lawsuits that might arise.
