Wicomico Co. Schools to move instruction online on inclement weather days

SALISBURY, Md. – Wicomico County School officials have announced an update to its inclement weather plans for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.

Starting on January 4th through the remainder of the school year, schools in the county will transition to fully virtual instruction on inclement weather days that would in the past have been delayed openings or snow days. This will be the case whether students are learning in virtual, small group or hybrid instruction models.

We’re told this plan will allow the school system to make a decision sooner when inclement weather is forecast, giving families earlier notice so they can make necessary adjustments and setting up a consistent framework for school status decisions.

By holding virtual instruction on inclement weather days, schools will be able to continue with the approved calendar without adding makeup days at the end of the year or adjusting holidays or professional days on the calendar.

On inclement weather days, students will follow the same schedule they would have followed that day, regardless of if they were scheduled to be in person or virtual. Students will be expected to log in on time to each of their classes, and attendance will be reported. Only in the case of a weather event severe enough to cause widespread power and internet outages would classes be canceled for the day and would result in a makeup day.
