Smyrna caps off their undefeated season with a Henlopen North title

SMYRNA, Del.- Behind another four Aidan Sanchez touchdown passes, the Smyrna Eagles defeated the Caesar Rodney Riders 44-15 for their fifth Henlopen title in the past six seasons.

The Eagles came out firing, three quick touchdowns, two TD passes from Aidan Sanchez to Yamir Knight (86 yards) and Devin Smith (80 yards) and a 26 yard Wayne Knight run off the right side to jump out a 22-0 lead.

The Riders were finally able to get on the board early in the second quarter off of a Tremere Woodlin 33 yard rainbow to Nate Waite to break the shut out. On the next Eagles drive, Sanchez continued his dominant performance. This time he found Wayne Knight on the screen pass and Knight took it 34 yards to the house for the 28-8 lead with 9:20 left in the first half. Another Riders punt led to another Sanchez dime, this one to Devin DeMoe in triple coverage to give the Eagles the 36-7 lead with five minutes to play in the half.

Finally, CR was able to get some momentum on offense with a Brock Conner 80 yard TD scamper to cut the deficit to 21. On the ensuing kickoff, the Riders went surprise onside and recovered to take back over at the Eagle 43. The extra drive didn’t amount to anything but time coming off the clock, CR got the ball down inside the 10 yard line but couldn’t punch it in. Smyrna led 36-15 at the half.

In the second half, the Eagles scored one more touchdown to put this one away. Dominick Galban up the gut for the 17 yard TD run as Smyrna won the Henlopen North for the fifth time in six seasons. Smyrna will wait until Sunday at Noon to find out who they will play in round one of the DIAA DI playoffs

The Riders finished their season tied for the second best record in the Henlopen North at 5-2.
