Giant Food helps a local butterfly sanctuary with reusable bags
MILLVILLE, Del. – For each reusable bag purchased the Millville Giant Foods, one dollar is being donated to Bird Song Gardens, a butterfly sanctuary in Frankford. This is all a part of Giant Food’s Community Bag Program.
“This is a great way to work with our customers, help the environment, and give back,” says Media Relations Manager, Daniel Wolk.
Giant Food launched their Community Bag Program at all 164 of their locations in 2019. For each reusable bag purchased at Giant, a dollar is donated to an organization of Giant’s choice. The Millville Giant recently selected the Bird Song Gardens butterfly sanctuary.
Owner and Operator of Bird Song Gardens sanctuary tells 47 abc, “well I’m just tickled to death that I was selected, I mean it was out of the blue as far as I’m concerned, I had no idea that I was going to be selected.”
Rickards says, he’s always looking for financial help with his sanctuary. After all, he doesn’t charge people to come see his garden.
Rickards also states, he’s just dedicated to providing a sanctuary for these butterflies and he says donations from Giant, can help with that.
“They’ll allow me to buy additional wildflowers seeds again enhance the picturesque view of the garden itself,” says Rickards.
A spokesperson for Giant says, he hopes this partnership will give Bird Song Gardens more exposure, while also encouraging people to be more environmentally friendly.
Wolk says, “we just think its the best way that people can purchase a reusable bag that they can use over and over again, instead of using plastic bags and its also just a way for customers to give back to the community.”
Giant officials state, they are constantly putting out this bag campaign on social media to gain attention for not only the program, but the organizations they partner with.
Every few months each Giant location picks a different non-profit to partner with. So far Giant has partnered with 2,500 different organizations.
As for Bird Song Gardens, they’ll be open to the public in early May of 2021.
