DEVELOPING: Fruitland man identified as driver in Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel crash
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A Fruitland man is still missing after he crashed his box truck off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Tuesday morning.
The Coast Guard says at around 8:30 a.m., someone called 911 and reported seeing a tractor-trailer crash through the southbound side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and go into the water.
Witnesses reported seeing a man exit the vehicle and drift west, according to the Coast Guard.
WAVY identifies the driver as 47-year-old Erik Mezick of Fruitland, Maryland.
At around 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Coast Guard announced they suspended their search for Mezick.
An online fundraiser has since been set up on GiveSendGo for the Mezick family. In the description of that fundraiser it says in part, “In an already difficult year, the family will have to end on a somber note that will leave a permanent scar in their hearts. It is within this time that friends and family can help in many ways, but we ask for donations to alleviate some of the financial burden that is around the corner.”
The Coast Guard tells 47ABC an investigation into what caused the crash is now underway.
They tell us the truck has not yet been removed from the water.
