Delmar alum Leatherbury signs on with CFL’s BC Lions
SALISBURY, Md. – Delmar alum Shane Leatherbury has signed a contract to play with the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League.
Leatherbury continues his pro career after losing out on a roster spot with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals earlier in the year. He had been signed by the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent.
Despite the short stint with the Cardinals the receiver says he gained a lot of knowledge from coaches, as well as the other receivers on the team including future hall of famer Larry Fitzgerald, and all-pro DeAndre Hopkins.
Despite the setback, Leatherbury continued to work hard in the gym, and says the support from his close family and friends was critical.
“You can’t just do things by yourself,” he said. “I’ve got great people around me. JD (Cherry), my trainer (at One More Rep). I’ve trained with a kid (WiHi alum) Nelson Brown as well… and they push me more than I could push myself.”
And though playing in the NFL is still the ultimate goal, the 5-foot-11 receiver is focused on the opportunity that is now in front of him.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity, I’m not going to overlook it thinking about the NFL because I’m not going to get there if I don’t handle what I have to handle right now.”
The BC Lions are coming off of a 5-13 record and a last place finish in the CFL Western Division.
