American Legion Post 28 raises concerns about some capacity limits issued by Carney

MILLSBORO, Del. – In Millsboro, American Legion Post 28 is sounding off about some capacity limits issued by Governor John Carney.

“If the people don’t stand up for the freedom that we fought for then what are we doing?” said American Legion Post 28 Commander Jim Beattie.

Beattie says only allowing for a 30 percent capacity or 50 people inside a business is outlandish. He says there’s been no consistency from Governor Carney on treating all businesses in Delaware equally. So, they’ve created a petition with hopes to bring about change.

“I see other things happening at other locations like the Christiana Mall. Okay, you go in there you cap them at 100,” said Beattie.

“Why are you capping them at 100 and you’re capping me at 50? Now I can’t even get to my 30 percent to keep the doors open here,” said Beattie.

The organization says in just three days they’ve gotten more than 500 signatures. They say people in the community including restaurants, places of worship, families, and even veterans are suffering because of these restrictions.

“We have a lot of veterans that have been affected since March because they come here for the fellowship, they come here for the comradery, they come to talk to each other, and support each other,” said Amy Fresh, marketing coordinator at American Legion Post 28.

On top of that, Beattie says these restrictions are making it harder for them and many other places to keep business going.

“Just our electric bills is 3,000 dollars,” said Beattie.

“Insurance per month 2,000 dollars,” said Beattie, “I mean you just can’t keep paying these bills if you’re going to restrict them people from coming into the post and it’s just not fair.”

Overall, Beattie says he hopes this petition catches the attention of state leaders and inspires change.

“I’m not against the masking, the social distancing, and so forth,” said Beattie, “What I’m against is the total thing about not being fair to all organizations.”

When issuing these restrictions, Governor Carney said, “These are difficult decisions, but we face a difficult and challenging winter.” Governor Carney said too many Delawareans have passed away as a result of the virus so his focus is on protecting lives.

People are encouraged to come inside the American Legion Post 28 to sign the petition. They can also participate in their Petition Drive-Thru on Friday, December 11 from 6 PM – 8 PM.

The American Legion Post 28 says if any business is willing to help and needs their help getting customers to sign the petition, they will send a representative.
