Salisbury community pitches in to help local girl with leukemia

SALISBURY, Md.
12 year old Alyssa Owens is going through a tough battle with leukemia.
The Salisbury native has an upbeat attitude – and has been making friends with the hospital staff at Children’s National Hospital in DC.
She even has a favorite. She noted she even has a favorite nurse, Claire.
However, Alyssa is looking forward to that moment when she returns home.
She tells us she has a few things to attend to, like opening Christmas presents and playing her favorite video games which include “Fornite” and “Call of Duty”.
It’s been a difficult process – and regrettably the leukemia was caught late. Initially she was treated for migraines and the leukemia diagnosis came much later.
After the diagnosis – the cousin of Alyssa’s mother sprung into action with a GoFundMe page.
Brandon Owens, Alyssa’s father, says he is grateful to the community, which has donated $4,000 so far.
Brandon tells 47ABC that any funds donated will help with the many trips to the hospital which is located in Washington DC.
