Winter sports season to begin December 7th for Wicomico Co. Schools
SALISBURY, Md. – The Maryland State Board of Education has voted to allow school systems to begin the Winter interscholastic athletic season on December 7th.
Maryland’s winter sports practices are scheduled to begin on this date, with competitions possibly beginning January 4th and ending February 13th. Fall sports are scheduled to begin on February 13th, and likely conclude competitions on April 17th. Spring sports are scheduled to begin April 17th and possibly wrap up June 19th.
Since September 28th, fall athletes in Wicomico County have had the opportunity to participate in voluntary in-person conditioning. This opportunity will be offered to spring sport athletes starting November 2nd.
With virtual learning taking place for the first semester of the school year, Wicomico’s interscholastic play was not scheduled to begin until February 1st, and would have had some overlap to give each sports season enough time for a shortened schedule. With a December 7th start date for winter sports, Wicomico and other Maryland school systems will be able to have three longer sports seasons without overlap.
We’re told Wicomico will revise its Return to Play Plan to reflect the latest schedule changes and sport-specific guidance from the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA).
