The late Woodlin to Cale connection boosts Caesar Rodney past Sussex Central
CAMDEN, Del.- Behind a Tremere Woodlin touchdown pass to Deontre Cale late in the fourth quarter, Caesar Rodney got the two point, 16-14 win over Sussex Central. The win boosts the Riders to 2-0 for the first time since 2017. With the loss, Central falls to 1-1.
The Riders got a 24 yard rushing touchdown early in the first quarter to give them the 7-0 lead. The Golden Knights got on the board after a CR botched snap went into the end zone. Central would get another touchdown with seconds left in the first quarter, a one yard Dion Stephens TD to give the Golden Knights a 8-7 lead to end the quarter.
In the second, the Riders retook the lead with a Jensen Reed 27 yard field goal. Just before the halftime break, Central got back in the end zone behind another one yard TD run by Phillip Stratton this time.
The second half was all about time of possession, neither team able to get in the end zone in the third quarter. In the fourth, CR went on a five minute long drive capped off by a 22 yard Tremere Woodlin dime to Deontre Cale to give the Riders their third lead of the game with 3:31 to play in the game. With time for just one more drive for Central, the Golden Knights got the ball deep in their own territory. Multiple penalties slowed the Golden Knights and ultimately led to a 4th and 15 with 51 seconds left to play. QB Zimir Gardner dropped back to pass looking for Sean McGee but Elijah Green was there to break the pass up and ice the game.
The Riders will ride the momentum of the 16-14 win into next week when they travel to Delmar to take on the Wildcats. The Golden Knights will try and get back in the win column when they host Smyrna.
