Special Olympics Maryland holding virtual Torch Run fundraising event

SALISBURY, Md. – Special Olympics athletes in Maryland are participating in a virtual Torch Run, that goes through Saturday, as a way to fundraise for the organization.

Due to the pandemic, law enforcement and athletes are running, walking and biking right in their communities this year. The goal is to complete 2,020 miles for the year 2020. The money raised goes to pay for things like athlete uniforms, transportation and equipment.

On Wednesday, 47 ABC spoke with a few local athletes and one of them says he’s excited to continue playing with his teammates and coaches. “I keep telling my teammates c’mon, c’mon, let’s get fired up. Let’s play and let’s win this gold. That’s what I tell them every time we step out on that field,” says Mark Wingate, a Special Olympics athlete.

The virtual fundraising event goes through Saturday, October 17th. Organizers hope by adapting the fundraising event to be virtual, they can “keep the Flame of Hope burning.”
