Oyster farmers struggling during pandemic, non-profit launches at-home shucking kits
MARYLAND – A Maryland organization is offering a new at-home oyster shucking experience as a way to help support local oyster farmers who are struggling due to restaurant closures.
Oyster Recovery Partnership partnered with Oysters XO to offer the new kits. You can buy them online and they include two professional shucking knives, a Dutch towel along with three dozen local Maryland oysters that are overnight shipped right to your door. You’ll also be able to participate in a virtual shucking class.
The organization says a lot of oyster farmers and harvesters have an excess of product right now and they’ve been struggling to get them into the right hands. “So we thought it was really important to shine a light on the oyster industry and showcase these great products, ready to eat oysters and allow that kind of connection getting them right into the hands of the consumer,” says Karis King with the Oyster Recovery Partnership.
All of the proceeds from these kits go to oyster restoration. The organization says just one oyster kit supports the planting of up to five-thousand oysters in the Chesapeake Bay which can filter as many as six-million gallons of water per day.
