Newton Community Center finally close to opening in Salisbury
SALISBURY, Md. – It’s been over a year in the works, but it looks like a community center here in Salisbury is finally nearing completion, to soon become a beacon of light for people in the area. The city of Salisbury has been working on the Newton Street Community Center since March of 2019. Officials say the coronavirus pandemic threw a wrench in the city’s plans who were actually hoping to have the center open by March of 2020. But after being on hiatus for a couple of months, construction workers are back inside painting walls and finishing last minute building projects, while the center’s organizers are making sure they have all the material they need for when they open. On Friday, 47 ABC spoke with Jermichael Mitchell who’s the Development Specialist for the city of Salisbury, who says this center will be a one-stop-shop full of critical resources for the community. And it’s something that’s long overdue.
“The biggest piece for me is just to see all of this come to fruition. We talked about it, we saw some issues and some problems, and now we’re slowly but surely working to fix those problems, and I truly feel that that’s what it’s always about. We’re just excited to just get in here, get active, and get some things going,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell adds that he hopes to have the community center up and running for the youth to use by the end of October as long as they don’t run into any other problems.
